During Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays of 2022, new technologies have dominated a lot of social media discussion. Namely, ChatGPT and Midjourney 4. ChatGPT is an open-source chat bot. Midjourney 4 is an open-source Image Creator using Artificial Intelligence and word prompts. Some say these technologies are the most disruptive technologies of the century.

There are some predictions that ChatGPT may surpass Google as a search engine for information and cause many headaches for educational systems. Many say that increased access to AI via ChatGPT is the greatest consumer invention since the iPhone.

OpenAi created ChatGPT which is an AI model interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests. ChatGPT is a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.

I have been exploring Midjourney 4 AI for the last few weeks too. Midjourney is a bot inside the Discord app. Discord is like Slack for gamers to share and communicate. I was curious about how ChatGPT would respond to some questions related to homeland security. The following are two chats with ChatGPT. I recognized that I was feeding it too much information and foreshadowing a possible response I wanted so in the second chat, I asked more open ended questions.

**The bolded text are the questions I asked ChatGPT and its responses follow.**

The images you see are Midjourney 4 AI image creations with related prompt text.

In the year of 2022, the Department of Homeland Security uses mental models of linear and reductionist thinking to examine security threats and challenges. How might we redesign homeland security to use alternative ways of thinking such as systems thinking and sensemaking to examine threats?

Angi English, Midjourney 4 prompt “poverty and hunger, a systems approach that is hopeful, in the style of Dali, detailed, — ar 3:2 — v 4”

ChatGPT: It is not appropriate for me to speculate on the future or make recommendations on how specific organizations should operate. However, I can discuss some potential benefits of using alternative ways of thinking, such as systems thinking and sensemaking, in the context of examining security threats and challenges.

Systems thinking is a way of understanding and analyzing complex systems and their interactions. It involves considering the relationships and connections between different elements within a system and how they influence each other. This approach can be particularly useful for understanding how small changes in one part of a system can have cascading effects on the overall system.

Sensemaking is the process of making sense of complex and ambiguous situations. It involves actively seeking out and gathering information from various sources, synthesizing and organizing that information, and using it to create a coherent and meaningful understanding of a situation. This approach can be helpful in situations where there is a lack of clarity or incomplete information, as it allows individuals to make sense of their environment and make decisions based on incomplete or ambiguous information.

Using systems thinking and sensemaking can help organizations like the Department of Homeland Security to more effectively understand and analyze complex security threats and challenges. By considering the relationships and connections between different elements within a system and actively seeking out and synthesizing information, organizations can gain a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the threats they face and develop more effective strategies for addressing them.

I understand that your engine training only began in 2021. However, homeland security is a complex adaptive system because of its many interconnections and interdependencies with other entities, including global connections. How does homeland security pivot from a reactive nature to a proactive one in the future?

Angi English, Mijourney 4 prompt “nuclear bombing New York city, Highly detailed photographed using a film camera with a high ISO setting and a wide aperture to see the texture and details — ar1:1, — v4”

ChatGPT: Homeland security is indeed a complex and dynamic system, with many interconnections and interdependencies with other entities. In order to move from a reactive to a proactive approach, it can be helpful for organizations like the Department of Homeland Security to adopt a systems thinking mindset. This means considering the relationships and connections between different elements within the system and how they influence each other. It also involves actively seeking out and synthesizing information from various sources in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the system and its dynamics.

One way that homeland security organizations can become more proactive is by developing and implementing strategies for anticipatory intelligence. This involves actively seeking out and analyzing information about potential threats or challenges that may arise in the future, and using that information to develop strategies for mitigating or addressing those threats. This can involve a variety of activities, such as gathering and analyzing intelligence about potential security threats, conducting risk assessments, and developing contingency plans.

Another way that homeland security organizations can become more proactive is by building strong partnerships and collaborations with other organizations, both within the government and in the private sector. By working together and sharing information and resources, these organizations can be more effective in anticipating and addressing security threats and challenges.

Finally, it can be helpful for homeland security organizations to adopt a culture of continuous learning and improvement. This means regularly reviewing and evaluating their processes and practices, and making adjustments as needed in order to stay ahead of potential threats and challenges. This can involve investing in training and development for employees, as well as investing in new technologies and tools that can help the organization stay ahead of emerging threats.

And, what about the psychological safety environments for employees of homeland security? By this I mean, how do we establish environments where security professionals feel safe to speak up without fear of punishment or humiliation, a byproduct of our industrial age hierarchical organization?

ChatGPT: Creating a psychological safe work environment for employees is important for the overall health and well-being of the workforce, as well as for the effectiveness of the organization. A psychological safe work environment is one in which employees feel comfortable speaking up, expressing their ideas and concerns, and asking questions without fear of punishment or humiliation.

Overall, creating a psychological safe work environment requires a commitment from leadership and all employees to create a culture of trust, respect, and open communication.

Do you think that psychological safety could lead to homeland security being a high reliability organization?

ChatGPT: Psychological safety can be an important factor in the development of a high reliability organization (HRO). A high reliability organization is one that has a track record of operating safely and effectively in complex and dynamic environments, despite facing significant challenges and threats.

Creating a psychological safe work environment can help to foster trust, open communication, and a sense of teamwork among employees, which are all key factors in building a high reliability organization. When employees feel comfortable speaking up and expressing their ideas and concerns without fear of retribution, they are more likely to report problems and suggest improvements, which can help the organization to identify and address potential risks and issues before they become major problems.

In addition, a psychological safe work environment can help to create a culture of continuous learning and improvement, which is also important for building a high reliability organization. When employees feel safe to share their ideas and concerns, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated to work together to identify and address issues that may impact the organization’s reliability.

Overall, while psychological safety is not the only factor that contributes to the development of a high reliability organization, it can be an important component of a successful HRO.

Ok, what are the inhibiting factors that would keep that from happening?

ChatGPT: There are a number of factors that could inhibit the development of a psychological safe work environment and the establishment of a high reliability organization (HRO). Some of these factors might include:

  1. Lack of leadership commitment: If leadership is not fully committed to creating a psychological safe work environment, it can be difficult to establish such an environment. Leadership needs to model the behavior they want to see in others and create a culture that supports open communication and encourages employees to speak up.
  2. Poor communication and transparency: If communication is not open and transparent within the organization, employees may be hesitant to speak up or share their ideas and concerns.
  3. Fear of retribution or punishment: If employees fear punishment or retribution for speaking up, they may be reluctant to share their ideas and concerns, which can inhibit the development of a psychological safe work environment.
  4. Lack of support and resources: If employees do not feel that they have the support and resources they need to do their jobs effectively, they may be less likely to feel confident in speaking up or suggesting improvements.
  5. Organizational culture: The culture of an organization can play a significant role in the development of a psychological safe work environment. If the culture is not supportive of open communication and continuous improvement, it may be difficult to establish a psychological safe work environment.

Overall, it is important for organizations to address these and other potential barriers to the development of a psychological safe work environment in order to establish a high reliability organization.

ChatGPT, explain quantum computing to a 9 year old.

Angi English, Midjourney 4 prompt, “uncertainty, child, in the style of Andrea Kowch, — ar 1:1, — v4”

ChatGPT: Sure! Quantum computing is a way of using tiny particles called “quantum bits” or “qubits” to perform calculations and solve problems. These particles can exist in multiple states at the same time, which allows quantum computers to work on many calculations at once.

Imagine you have a computer that can solve math problems. A regular4" computer can only solve one problem at a time, but a quantum computer can solve many problems at the same time because it can work on all the possible answers at the same time. This makes it much faster and more powerful than a regular computer.

Quantum computers are still very new and are not yet widely available, but scientists and engineers are working on developing them and finding new ways to use them to solve problems that regular computers can’t handle.

Explain tribal psychology to a 6 year old.

ChatGPT: Tribal psychology is the study of how people form groups and identify with their group. It looks at how people’s behavior and thinking is influenced by their group membership, and how groups can influence the way people think and act.

Here’s a simple way to explain tribal psychology to a 6 year old:

Imagine you have a group of friends who all like to play with toy cars. You might think of yourselves as the “car club” because you all have the same interest. You might even have a special name for your group or a secret handshake. When you’re with your friends in the car club, you might feel like you’re part of something special and you might behave differently than you would if you were alone or with a different group of friends.

That’s a simple example of how tribal psychology works. People often feel a strong sense of belonging and identification with their group, and this can influence their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Explain social prejudice to a 5 year old.

ChatGPT: Social prejudice refers to negative attitudes and feelings that people have towards members of certain groups. It can be based on things like race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or other characteristics.

Here’s a simple way to explain social prejudice to a 5 year old:

Imagine you have a group of friends who all like to play with dolls. One of your friends, let’s call her Sarah, likes to play with dolls that have brown skin, just like hers. Another friend, let’s call him Jake, doesn’t like to play with dolls that have brown skin. He only wants to play with dolls that have white skin, like his.

Sarah might feel sad or angry because Jake doesn’t want to play with dolls that look like her. She might feel like Jake doesn’t like her because she has brown skin, even though they’re friends. This is an example of social prejudice, because Jake has a negative attitude towards dolls that have brown skin, and this attitude is based on Sarah’s skin color.

Social prejudice can be harmful because it can lead to discrimination and unequal treatment of people based on their group membership. It’s important to recognize and challenge social prejudice when we see it, and to treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what they look like or where they come from.

What were the significant causes of the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States?

Angi English, Midjourney 4 prompt, “New York City on September 11, 2001, attack on the twin towers, terrorism, detailed, in the style of surrealism — ar 3:2 — v 4”

ChatGPT: The September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, also known as 9/11, were a series of terrorist attacks perpetrated by the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. The attacks targeted the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and resulted in the deaths of almost 3,000 people.

There were several significant causes of the 9/11 attacks, including:

  1. Ideological motives: Al-Qaeda, the group responsible for the attacks, was motivated by a radical ideology that called for the establishment of an Islamic state and the removal of Western influence from the Muslim world.
  2. Personal grievances: The leader of al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, had personal grievances with the United States, including its support for Israel and its military presence in Saudi Arabia.
  3. Lack of political resolution: The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, as well as the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 1990 and its continuing military presence in the Middle East, contributed to a lack of political resolution in the region and fueled anger and resentment towards the United States.
  4. Ability to plan and execute the attack: Al-Qaeda had the resources and capability to plan and execute a complex and sophisticated attack, including the training and funding of the terrorists who carried out the attacks.

The 9/11 attacks had significant consequences, including the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan and the global War on Terror. They also had a profound impact on global politics and international relations, and continue to be a significant event in world history.

But, intelligence failed to adequately prevent the attack, why?

ChatGPT: There are several reasons why intelligence agencies failed to adequately prevent the September 11, 2001 attacks, also known as 9/11.

One reason is that intelligence agencies did not have sufficient information about the planning and execution of the attacks. Al-Qaeda, the group responsible for the attacks, was very secretive and successful at hiding its activities. In addition, the attacks were complex and involved multiple operatives and locations, making it difficult for intelligence agencies to piece together the full picture.

Another reason is that intelligence agencies did not prioritize the threat of terrorism, especially from non-state actors like al-Qaeda. Prior to 9/11, the focus of intelligence agencies was primarily on state-sponsored threats, and there was not a strong emphasis on detecting and preventing terrorist attacks.

Finally, there were also issues with the sharing and analysis of intelligence information. Different intelligence agencies had pieces of the puzzle, but there was not sufficient communication and collaboration to connect the dots and identify the threat in time.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, intelligence agencies made significant efforts to improve their ability to detect and prevent future terrorist attacks, including strengthening intelligence sharing and analysis, increasing resources for counter-terrorism efforts, and establishing new agencies and programs focused on terrorism.

Ok, then. What about January 6th attack on the US Capitol, what happened for the lack of intelligence there?

ChatGPT: The attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 was a violent siege on the U.S. Capitol building that resulted in the deaths of five people and numerous injuries. The attackers were supporters of then-President Donald Trump who were attempting to disrupt the certification of the presidential election results.

There are several factors that may have contributed to intelligence failures leading up to the attack on the U.S. Capitol:

  1. Insufficient intelligence gathering: There were indications that some of the attackers were planning and coordinating their actions online, but it is not clear if intelligence agencies were monitoring these activities or if they had sufficient resources dedicated to tracking online radicalization.
  2. Lack of coordination: There were also reports of poor coordination between federal and local law enforcement agencies, which may have hindered their ability to effectively respond to the attack.
  3. Misinformation: There was widespread misinformation and conspiracy theories leading up to the attack, which may have made it more difficult for intelligence agencies to distinguish between credible threats and baseless claims.
  4. Political pressure: There have been allegations that some intelligence agencies faced political pressure to downplay the potential for violence at the U.S. Capitol.

It is not uncommon for intelligence failures to occur, as predicting and preventing violent events is often difficult due to the complex and dynamic nature of threats. In the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Capitol, there have been calls for reforms to intelligence gathering and sharing processes in order to improve the ability of intelligence agencies to identify and prevent future threats.

Where are you getting this information?

Angi English, Midjourney 4 prompt, “connected systems, artificial intelligence, detailed, in the style of Gabriel Pacheco — ar 3:2, v4”

ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I do not have the ability to browse the internet or access new information. The information I provide is based on my programming and the knowledge that has been built into me. My knowledge base includes a wide range of general knowledge and facts, as well as information about current events and historical events up until my knowledge cutoff in 2021. I do not have access to new information about current events or developments that have occurred after my knowledge cutoff.

So, are you saying that your chat information is only as good as you are programmed and trained?

ChatGPT: Yes, that’s correct. As an AI language model, I can provide information and generate responses based on the knowledge that has been built into me, but I do not have the ability to access new information or browse the internet. My responses are based on the information and understanding that I have been programmed with, and I do not have the ability to update or change this information.

It is important to keep in mind that I am a machine learning model and not a human expert. While I can provide accurate and reliable information on a wide range of topics, I may not always have all the information or be able to provide a complete or nuanced understanding of every topic. I am here to assist you and provide helpful information, but it is always a good idea to verify and cross-reference any information you receive, including information from me.

So, the nuances of human intelligence, including human insight and emotional intelligence are also vital to problem solving?

ChatGPT: Yes, human intelligence includes a wide range of cognitive and emotional abilities that are essential for problem solving and decision making.

Insight and emotional intelligence are particularly important for solving complex problems and making informed decisions. Insight refers to the ability to see and understand the relationships between different pieces of information, and to use this understanding to generate new ideas or solve problems. Emotional intelligence involves the ability to recognize and understand one’s own emotions and the emotions of others, and to use this understanding to effectively navigate social situations and make decisions.

Human intelligence is complex and multifaceted, and it is not limited to cognitive abilities like memory and reasoning. Insight, emotional intelligence, and other social and emotional skills are all important for problem solving and decision making, and they can complement and enhance cognitive abilities.

How do you filter out biases and heuristics in the information you are trained on?

ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I do not have personal biases or heuristics because I do not have personal experiences or subjective perspectives. However, the data that is used to train language models like myself can contain biases and heuristics.

There are several ways to address biases and heuristics in the training data of AI language models:

  1. Data preprocessing: One way to reduce biases and heuristics in training data is to preprocess the data before it is used to train the model. This can involve techniques such as data cleaning and normalization to remove errors and inconsistencies in the data.
  2. Data augmentation: Another approach is to use data augmentation techniques to generate additional training data that is more diverse and representative of the target population. This can help to reduce biases and heuristics in the training data by increasing its representativeness.
  3. Bias detection and correction: There are also tools and techniques that can be used to detect biases and heuristics in the training data and apply corrections to mitigate their impact on the model’s performance.

It is important to note that it is not possible to completely eliminate biases and heuristics from the training data of an AI language model, as these can be present in the language and text that the model is trained on. However, by using these and other approaches, it is possible to reduce their impact and improve the overall quality and fairness of the model.

Then, what is the benefit to AI now and in the future?

ChatGPT: AI (artificial intelligence) has the potential to bring many benefits to society, both now and in the future.

Some of the potential benefits of AI include:

  1. Increased efficiency and productivity: AI can automate tasks and processes, allowing humans to focus on more complex and creative work. This can lead to increased efficiency and productivity in many industries.
  2. Improved decision making: AI can help humans make better decisions by providing access to large amounts of data and using advanced algorithms to analyze and interpret it.

Do you think that a digital watermark or “styleme,” a fingerprint in hidden in language could help educational institutions recognize AI generated work versus human intelligence work?

Angi English, Midjourney 4 prompt, “Futuristic drone, character sketches, concept sheet, grey renders, line drawing, in the style of Oscar Niemeyer, — ar 3:2”

ChatGPT: It is possible that a digital watermark or “styleme” could be used to identify AI-generated work, although it is important to note that such techniques are not foolproof and may not be completely reliable.

A digital watermark is a hidden code or mark that is embedded in a digital document or file and can be used to identify the source or ownership of the content. Similarly, a “styleme” or language fingerprint could be used to identify the unique writing style or language patterns of an individual, which could potentially be used to differentiate between human-generated and AI-generated content.

However, it is important to note that it may be possible for someone to imitate or mimic the writing style or language patterns of another individual, including those of an AI, which could make it difficult to accurately identify the source of the content. In addition, there may be limitations to the types of content that can be accurately identified using these techniques, and it is possible that some AI-generated content may be difficult to distinguish from human-generated content.

Overall, while digital watermarks and language fingerprints may be useful tools for identifying the source of content, they should not be relied upon as the sole means of distinguishing between human-generated and AI-generated work. It is always important to carefully evaluate the quality and authenticity of information, regardless of its source.
